What is SAP® S/4HANA®?
The SAP® Business Suite S/4HANA® is the latest ERP generation from SAP and the successor to SAP ERP® ECC6.0. As one of its special features, S/4HANA makes use of the enormous potential of the SAP HANA in-memory technology. In order to make the technical possibilities of the in-memory platform usable, it was necessary to simplify the data model and to simplify the processes by providing new interfaces to enable intuitive operation. It is simply not possible to make the necessary adjustments in a delivered software such as an ERP system. SAP S/4HANA not only relies on simple interfaces based on simplified data structures, but also uses platform capabilities such as text search. This creates the technical basis for companies to improve existing processes and define new processes. This serves as a basis for new products and services, right up to completely new business models.
Advantages of S/4HANA – In 3 key points!
- A new design that focuses on the user and his role-specific needs, is browser-based and available on all end devices and supports the communication of all process participants in the system.
- A modern architecture, which allows to map all processes in one system on the basis of a simplified data model. This also applies to processes that previously had to be mapped in different systems.
- A smart business approach, which actively informs users when critical key figures are exceeded or not reached and is able to make predictions based on preview algorithms.
Foreign trade functions in S/4HANA
Already in SAP R/2® and SAP R/3®, companies with international business relations used various standardized functionalities for foreign trade. In 2000, the classic – and until then paper-driven – import and export declaration was then converted to electronic communication and bundled together with the existing foreign trade functionalities in SAP Global Trade Services® (SAP GTS®). Since then, SAP GTS has been the customs and foreign trade platform of SAP.
SAP GTS is being continuously developed and remains SAP’s customs and foreign trade platform. Customers who are now using SAP S/4HANA have the opportunity to use foreign trade functionalities in SAP S/4HANA step by step. Building on the experience of the existing SAP GTS, SAP selectively develops foreign trade functionalities directly in SAP S/4HANA. The first step was to develop Intrastat functionalities in SAP S/4HANA. The foreign trade functionalities newly developed in SAP S/4HANA are summarized under “SAP S/4HANA for International Trade”. The BEX Z components developed for SAP offer a real alternative. For example, those who want to start the export declaration from the ERP, as is customary with ECC 6.0, will also find an efficient solution in the new Business Suite with ZAES FOR YOU! The same applies to preference calculation with ZGENESYS and sanctioned party list screening with ZSANSCREEN.

What is the “Digital Core”?
Many people think of the “digitalization of business processes” first of all as automated management of operational processes, which reduces manual work steps. With S/4HANA, the possibilities of digital transformation go much further, eliminating the separation of the direct merchandise management system and the digital value-added chains. In concrete terms, this means that data from suppliers, business partners, customers or machines are processed in real time and are available for direct use. All the information obtained flows directly into S/4HANA and can be used in a fully automated manner. This turns data itself into a production factor. The digital core is thus the heart of the system, which provides the data of the system in a solution-oriented manner at the right time.
What are the advantages of the SAP HANA in-memory database?
The main purpose of SAP HANA is to perform complex queries of any kind in the shortest possible time without aggregating the data in advance – and consequently losing information. At its core, SAP HANA uses in-memory technology for this purpose, with which even large amounts of data can be analyzed in seconds. Real-time processing is made possible by the fact that SAP HANA uses the main memory and the various caches of currently available hardware and has even been able to influence the development of new processor generations. In-memory databases enable even very large amounts of data to be processed quickly. This in itself is a significant advantage over previously available technologies. Furthermore, it opens up further options for the development of novel applications with a practical business benefit:
- the integration of data of different formats such as text, image, video, for example in the form of virtual access
- customers can thus set up application scenarios without additional hardware and software solutions and avoid data redundancies
- availability of functions on the basis of which the data can be further processed, such as the representation of data in maps based on the “Geo Spatial Engine
SAP provides a detailed list of the database functions in HANA in this document.
